The Gr8 Db8 is entertaining and instructive–reassuring for crystak parents and teachers, illuminating for teenagers, and fascinating for everyone interested in what’s currently happening to language and communication. Crystal’s answers are convincing, particularly when he quotes clever “text message poetry” as proof that relentless word-shortening and a strict character count needn’t limit linguistic craft. The chapter on text messaging in languages other than English was nothing short of an ordeal.

The book seemed to go on forever and sometimes repeated the same information and research over and over again. It’s a pretty boring read, to tell you the truth. To be sure, there are some interesting facts for readers to glean from these pages, but my feeling is that those with an interest in linguistics may be the only readers who will truly appreciate the author’s efforts.

This was one that really interested me as text speak is something that really grates, but is also something I used a lot in my teens! The book does a great job in convincing me that there is really nothing either deviant or inappropriate about how texting came to be. It deals comprehensively with many different languages, and the examples it gives are quite enlightening, sometimes entertaining. Nor is texting likely to result in any further diminishing of the standard our mother tongue. As ever, Crystal is interesting and insightful to read, and this book is fairly accessible, even gr88 those outside the field.
